How to choose a licensed asbestos removalist

Choose a licensed asbestos removalist by checking the licence class on the state register, matching it to friable or non-friable work, and asking who will handle sampling, waste and clearance. Start with the register, not the quote heading

Safe Work Australia explains Class A (friable and non-friable) and Class B (non-friable only). The live card is issued by the WHS regulator where the work will happen: SafeWork NSW, WorkSafe Victoria, WHSQ, WorkSafe WA, SafeWork SA, or the ACT / Tasmania / NT equivalent. Search the business name and the number they give you. Check expiry and conditions. A NSW licence does not automatically cover a Melbourne job.

Match the class to the material — without deciding it yourself

You cannot tell asbestos by looking, and you cannot tell friable from bonded by looking. See can you visually identify asbestos and friable versus non-friable asbestos. A competent person and, if needed, a NATA laboratory come first. A removalist who wants to start cutting before anyone has identified the product is not the careful option.

Ask for a written scope, not a handshake

A useful scope says what will be removed, what will be left, who notifies the regulator if notification is required, how waste will be packaged, and which category of approved facility will take it. Ask who will be on site. Ask whether subcontractors hold the same class. Ask what happens if extra ACM is found behind the first lining. You still verify every licence yourself.

What not to use as the deciding fact

The cheapest number someone said on the phone. We will not invent prices, and we will not tell you what a “typical” job costs. A neighbour’s memory of “a bloke last winter”. A Facebook comment with no address. A magnetic sign that says ASBESTOS. A website that leads with five unnamed stars and no register link.

Council approval can still be a separate question, especially for demolition in WA and elsewhere. Ask the council as well as the licensed person. We do not invent permit rules.

Insurance certificates and “we did the street last year” are extras. The first filter is a current licence that matches friable versus non-friable work in the state where the house sits.
