Asbestos removal Sydney
Fibro in the west and south-west, wet-area linings everywhere pre-1990, and a regulator that already tells you to get a licensed professional.

For Sydney and NSW work, engage a licensed asbestos professional. NSW public guidance at asbestos.nsw.gov.au states that renovations — big or small — should use a licensed professional, and that you cannot tell by looking whether a material contains asbestos. SafeWork NSW issues the licences. This page is a housing-stock and regulator explainer, not a booking desk and not a DIY method.
Definition
NSW licensed removalist. A removalist licensed by SafeWork NSW for the class of work — Class A for friable and non-friable asbestos, Class B for non-friable only. Confirm the licence on official NSW tools, not on a van decal or on this page.
Direct answer
Engage a licensed asbestos professional. asbestos.nsw.gov.au leads with licensed professionals for renovations and states that 1 in 3 homes have asbestos. That is their published figure; we cite it rather than inventing a new one. SafeWork NSW is the WHS regulator that issues Class A and Class B asbestos removal licences in this state. This site is not.
/asbestos-removal-sydney/ is a capital hub for Greater Sydney and NSW housing stock. It is not a national definition (that is what is asbestos) and it is not a method for taking a roof or a paling fence apart.
Housing stock: fibro west, bungalows east, two eras on one title
Greater Sydney did not build one house type. California bungalows and Federation fronts in the inner west and north shore often hide later asbestos-cement additions: painted eaves, sleep-outs, carport linings and wet-area sheet behind a 1915 façade. Postwar fibro in the west and south-west — Blacktown, Mount Druitt, Liverpool, Fairfield, Campbelltown, parts of Penrith and the older Holroyd streets — is the fabric NSW public sites are talking about when they talk about fibro. Brick veneer from the 1960s–80s still used cement eaves and bathroom linings even when the street looks “solid brick”.
Western and south-western suburbs are famous for fibro. That fame is not a test result for any one house. A 2010s knock-down-rebuild on a Blacktown block can sit next to an untouched 1964 fibro cottage. Age of the fabric you are about to disturb matters more than the year on the title or the suburb’s current median.
Sutherland Shire, the Hills, and the older Central Coast commuter belt share the same pre-1990 window. Coastal weather does not make cement sheet safer to water-blast. Humidity and salt air can deteriorate exposed edges; deterioration raises urgency for a licensed assessment, not a DIY scraper.
Walk the house without touching it using asbestos in my home. Wet areas have their own hub: asbestos in the bathroom. Roofs and fences are asbestos roof removal and asbestos fence removal.
NSW exceptions — and why we still say no
NSW’s unlicensed-removal page explains that a homeowner or tradesperson may remove less than 10 m² of non-friable asbestos in limited cases, and that more than 10 m² or any friable amount requires a licensed removalist. The same page says there is no safe level of exposure and strongly recommends a licensed removalist.
This site does not provide a method for the exception. We will not list tools, wetting steps, wrapping patterns, or a “how to stay under 10 m²” workaround. Ten square metres is a regulatory threshold on a public page, not a weekend project brief. Friable material — including bonded sheet that has been crushed, sanded or left powdery — is never a homeowner job.
If you hire a contractor, the house (or part of it) becomes a workplace and the WHS laws apply to that contractor. A builder who is not licensed for asbestos is not a loophole. Confirm the licence with SafeWork NSW. Do not rely on a magnetic sign on a ute.
Testing, removal, waste — still the national sequence
Suspicion is not a laboratory result. Arrange assessment and, if needed, NATA analysis through a competent person. The national evidence page is asbestos testing. Class A covers friable and non-friable work; Class B covers non-friable. Clearance for Class A sits with a licensed asbestos assessor, not with this website. Disposal belongs at an approved facility, not in a mixed skip — asbestos collection and disposal. If a previous tradie left a pile “for the tip”, request licensed pickup on asbestos collection and removal. The process outline is asbestos removal.
National reading still applies in NSW: Safe Work Australia — asbestos, WHS duties, and ASEA.
What Sydney renovations keep disturbing
The jobs that show up against this hub are predictable. A Super Six or corrugated cement roof before summer in the west. A fibro paling fence after a southerly on a corner block. Eaves drilled for cameras or downlights in an inner-west bungalow. A 1970s bathroom behind a Federation front in Ashfield or Marrickville. Vinyl tiles under a later floor in a Penrith kitchen. Switchboard backing in a laundry that has never been opened.
None of those details invents a price or a licence number. They only tell you which fabric to describe when you ask for an assessment. Leave the sheet. Do not water-blast eaves. Do not drop a cladding plank “to see if it is fibro”. Do not load palings into a trailer bound for an unknown landfill.
Council waste rules and EPA facility lists change. Live locators sit on state asbestos and EPA pages, not in an invented directory here. SafeWork NSW remains the licence check. asbestos.nsw.gov.au remains the homeowner voice.
Other capitals, same standing rule
If you needed Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide, use asbestos removal Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide. The standing sentence does not change with the airport code: engage a licensed asbestos professional and verify the licence in the state where the work happens.
